Formed as a small chamber ensemble at Nonclassical’s annual Battle of the Bands Competition in London, UK from January of 2016, Ensemble in Process is a rotating artistic platform with respect to size, instrumentation, and nature of specific programming. 2017 was the first year of operation for Ensemble in Process. Whether it’s a concert of solo piano works, duos/trios, interdisciplinary collaborations with choreographers or visual artists, Ensemble in Process refers to an ever evolving organic process of creative artists coming together.
We firmly believe that there is a spark lacking in today’s contemporary classical music environment, which has lead to a well-recognized struggle to draw in new audiences. Years of experience working with film, this project aims to draw in elements of visuals and/or choreographic disciplines. Ensemble in Process also programs series that include works specifically written for videos, whether it’s pre-existing, public domain, or new artistic content. This approach will encourage audiences to experience music in a different framework, not governed by the traditional models of classical music production.
The debut concert Americuration had taken place at the Iklectik Art Lab on May 15, 2017 in Southeast London, UK, which featured emerging and established American composers, with performances from leading artists in the London scene, including the award winning UK ensemble The Marsyas Trio.
The very first concert in the US took place at Phoenix Art College in 2019, as part of the Oh My Ears Festival. Since then, Ensemble in Process has curated concerts in New York City, Boston, Madison, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, with collaborations from members of the Peridot Duo, Unheard of Ensemble, Beltline Bones Quartet, Tessa Brinckman and other artists throughout the NYC metropolitan area. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Ensemble in Process had presented three online virtual concerts, one that was awarded a COVID-19 performance grant from “Live from our Living Rooms” in partnership with Music Talks.
In collaboration with RyderDance company, Ensemble in Process was awarded its first professional grant in 2021, the Brooklyn Arts Fund administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council. The performance culminated in a new collaborative work for violin, delay processing pedal, video installation and choreographed dance, entitled “The Illusion of Separateness,” dissecting the new reality of “social distancing” and the human ability to connect during a time of being apart.
Ensemble in Process presented a short pre-recorded performance set in the 2021 New Music Gathering Online Conference. “Processing the American Dream” was a set comprised of three solo works accompanied with video art pertaining to the various complexities of the American Dream.
Ensemble in Process was invited to an artist residency for the first time in June of 2022, having been in residence at the Avalon Farm Music Institute.
Ensemble in Process was a recent recipient of the 2023 Winter Grant from Causality Brand Grant Association, in preparation for a new revised logo that is now visible on this website. The logo stems from the PRESS|PAUSE solo piano event that was virtually premiered during the pandemic in May of 2020. The “PRESS|PAUSE” logo was based on the iconic image of the “pause” button associated with electronics and gadget buttons (CD players, walkmans, tape recorders, etc), emphasizing the desire to briefly pause from the noise of our chaotic fast paced world we live in, where the audience and performers come together in a spiritual artistic gathering. The blue-green logo is also associated with water and the color of the Statue of Liberty in NYC, given that the PRESS|PAUSE virtual event was created with a view of Lady Liberty from our window in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Brian Mark is the Artistic Director of Ensemble in Process. The concert series collective is headquartered in Brooklyn, New York City, and the current board member is NYC based musician Allyson Clare, who also performs on violin, viola and vocals for the ensemble.
Ensemble in Process has been fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas since Spring of 2022.
